What is the best laptop to by.?

I need to get a new laptop soon. I'm about to go off to collage so i want something that will be portable (less than 16" is good). I need something that will be powerful enough to run things like solid works, auto cad, photo shop ext. I also want the longest battery life possible. I have about $1500 to spend.
