Why did John Adams suggest that the president be referred to as "His Majesty"?

So I am reading the book "Founding Brothers," and I have quite a few short answer questions to answer. I am stuck on this question. I know that no one in the Senate agreed with this idea because they didn't want to be ociated with monarchy, but I'm not sure why he proposed this idea. Help?
