Why does Japan think that they attacked the Pearl Harbor for the United States?
You are right in that most Japanese liked the United States including the diplomatic corps which strongly advised against war with the United States. There was a Mr. Terasaki attached to the Japanese emby in Washington D. C. in 1942 who was married to an American. Her book, Bridge to the Sun, contains more information of what was going on in diplomatic circles. The journals of Mr. Terasaki himself have been invaluable to Japanese historians because he recorded what Emperor Hirohito said to him about the war (publicly Hirohito never ventured an opinion). If you can find these sources, you might get a more rounded opinion of what was going on then.
